Government House
A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to attend the open day of Government House in Hobart. Apparently it happens once a year, or hardly ever, depending on who you ask, so we felt it was of great importance that we didn’t miss the occasion. On arrival I was handed a lovely invitation printed on costly paper with gold embellishments. The Queen had personally invited me to her open day, which...

MOMA - the newest Hobart Market
We’ve had such a brilliant couple of weeks here in Hobart, I really can’t stress enough - you must plan to come over next January.  It’s hot, jaw-droppingly beautiful and there is so much to see and do. Most of it is organised by MONA, but hey, they do it well so who’s complaining. MOMA, is the new Saturday market, for people who prefer not to get up at the crack of dawn...

The Two Metre Tall Company, Hayes.
Yesterday we were lucky enough to snap up two spare seats in a mates van for a trip out to Hayes, which is near Bushy Park, where nearly all the hops in Australia are grown. I’ve been wanting to visit the Two Metre Tall Company ever since another friend told us about it at the micro-brew beer fest and it certainly didn’t disappoint. http://2mt.com.au/ The beer is all brewed from...

Brian Ritchie, Dresden Dolls, Mick Harvey and John...
My greatest highlight of this years Mona Foma music festival - The MOFO Supergroup performing the entire first Violent Femmes album, from start to finish, with no stopping for breath. I’m afraid there isn’t enough expletives to adequately describe just how amazing this gig was. Brian Ritchie, the Violent Femmes bassist and the best thing to happen to Tassie since cheese and oysters,...

MONA FOMA Opening Night Street Party
What a way to start a festival! Have a free concert, in a car park, right in the centre of Hobart.  Good thinking MONA FOMA!! Last night we went to the opening night of MONA FOMA.  It’s a week long music and arts festival officially run by MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart’s world renowned art museum, but largely organised by Brian Ritchie, Hobart’s most well-known...

Sorell Fruit Farm - Sorell, Tasmania
Ever read any Heidi or Anne of Green Gables books? That’s what picking strawberries at the Sorell Fruit Farm reminded me of.  Good, clean, fun. 19th Century style.  It’s safe to say Richard found me skipping through the fields a bit odd but hey, he was too busy stuffing berries down his gob he didn’t care! Sorell Fruit Farm is a simple premise, and it’s delightful that...

The Taste Festival - Hobart 2011
The Taste Festival is an annual Hobart event, and quite possibly, the best event of them all. The beauty of it is that it’s free to get in to, so as locals, we’re able to wander down and grab a gourmet lunch every day for a week. That’s an undeniably wonderful treat! We decided to go at 1pm on the 31st of December, probably not the smartest move.  We were expecting raucous...

Mt Nelson Signal Station Cafe
Last weekend we kicked off Richard’s birthday celebrations by taking a drive up Mt Nelson to gawk at the view and test out the cafe. And boy were we glad we made the effort! www.thestationcafe.com.au All the tables in the cafe are situated so you have atleast 180 degrees worth of views to feast on. And what a view it is! The water stretches for miles around Hobart and from your seat you...

Oscar Wilde's grave "cleaned up" →
I suppose one benefit of travelling, is getting to see things before bureaucracy takes over. I don’t like Oscar Wilde’s morals, but surely it’s appropriate for his gravestone to have kisses and messages of lust all over it. Perhaps now our photos of these messages will be an historical record of a moment in time?

WatchWatch
Check out this video.  About 15 seconds in see if you can spot a nice man in a green t-shirt! Another shot of us in the crowd featured proudly in the Sunday newspaper.  (I’ve already framed it and sent it to Mum)

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs →
This is the album that sums up our six month holiday.  It reminds us of travelling in our rental car around Wales with Colin, and of being in Glasgow together. Of buying docs, of seeings art galleries and gardens together and of investigating old tunnels in Lyon.  It is beautiful music. It was our first purchase at the beginning of our trip six months ago.  I recommend it to everyone.  Arcade Fire...

We Get Around! →
Ever since arriving in Hobart we’ve made a concerted effort to investigate our new surroundings. Countless hours have been spent with our necks craned, pointing gormlessly at various landmarks and beauty spots. When you come here, I encourage you to sneak a glance sideways. You’ll be awestruck by the local’s great protective grandfather, Mt Wellington. The omnipresent beast...

We're baaacck!!
Last time I looked at the blog we were preparing to leave the beautiful dreamy island of Mauritius. I had lost most of my ability to use grammar correctly and developed a tan on my back.  Two phenomenons that prior to visiting that island were about as likely as Auckland’s new restaurants staying open after the World Cups over. So, by way of an update, Richard and I arrived in Hobart in the middle...

It's all over....
We leave Mauritius tomorrow evening.  When we arrive in Hobart there will be high winds, snow and it’ll only be six degrees. I don’t know if I’ll ever post on this blog again, since we won’t be travelling for a while.  However, I thought the below photo would be a fitting one to end with.  It should put the fear of God into you, the way it did me when Richard pointed it...

A Really Big Trip....
We’re currently on the plane flying over Lybia, Serbia and Greece and I’m reminded of the start of our trip. Back then our days were spent narrowly avoiding natural disasters of epic proportions. The Christchurch earthquake really upset our plan to spend seven days getting into the southern way of life.  We were all ready to become rascist, get into fights outside KFC and wear tops...

just a quick note....
Hi all, I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who gave me compliments about the blog! I do all the captions and words, but Richard takes all the wonderful photos.  It’s quite addictive writing it although I think Richard is getting sick of me making him take photos of funny shop signs, ridiculous food items and strange vehicles to put on here! (Although he got equally excited by...

Krakow to Prague to Berlin
I realised yesterday I only told you all about Auschwitz when I wrote on here about our visit to Krakow.  That’s unfortunate really because, as much as Auschwitz is now etched in our minds, and certainly worthy of a mention here, it doesn’t define Poland as much as you might think. I loved Krakow.  Everything about it was intriguing, exciting, beautiful and peaceful. There are fabulous...
